India vs Bangladesh U19: No Handshake at Toss Sparks Controversy at ODI World Cup 2026

A “no handshake” trend is spreading in cricket. Because of rising political tensions, some teams are no longer following the usual spirit of sportsmanship.
Earlier today at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, India Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre and Bangladesh Under-19 vice-captain Zawad Abrar did not shake hands after Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field first. India senior team captain Suryakumar Yadav had refused to greet Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha thrice in the 2025 Asia Cup. It has caught on since.
We have seen this happen before. Harmanpreet Kaur and Fatima Sana ignored each other at the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. The same thing happened during the Men’s Under-19 Asia Cup 2025, and now again at the Men’s Under-19 ODI World Cup 2026. Bangladesh’s captain, Md Azizul Hakim Tamim, wasn’t feeling well, and Abrar stepped in for him. Mhatre flicked the coin and was put in to bat first. As they crossed each other, the two youngsters didn’t shake hands and didn’t wish to look each other in the eye. The coldness was visible.
No handshakes in IND vs BAN matches
India and Pakistan have been at odds for years, but it seems Bangladesh has entered the ‘no entry’ list for India as well. The whole issue started after Bangladesh objected to India harbouring their last Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who has been sentenced to death by hanging after she was found guilty of crimes against humanity. However, India has issues as well. Several top Bangladesh government officials have made disparaging comments about India, including talking about annexing parts of India.
Recently, the lynching of innocent Hindu men had created an uproar in India. These issues have influenced cricket between the two nations. Mustafizur Rahman was removed from the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2026 has been put on hold, and Bangladesh is refusing to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026.
