Before the Test series against India began, India’s second team showed they were stronger than South Africa’s second team. India A won the first unofficial ODI against South Africa A in Rajkot. Team India achieved the target of 286 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 49.3 overs. The hero of the victory was the out-of-favour Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scripted the victory by scoring his 17th century in List A cricket.

Gaikwad played a brilliant innings of 117 runs off 129 balls with 10 fours. Team India's T20 squad heroes Abhishek Sharma (30 runs) and Tilak Verma (39 runs) could not play big innings here, but they made significant contributions to the victory. Finally, Nitish Kumar Reddy (37 runs) and Nishant Sindhu (29 runs not out), who were released from the Kolkata Test squad, put on a fine sixth-wicket partnership to secure victory. Harshit Rana completed the winning run with a six, and Team India reached 290 for 6.

Chasing the target, India A got off to a flying start with Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma. Gaikwad held one end, while Abhishek was in his explosive form. The two added 64 runs in 9.3 overs. Abhishek was dismissed for 31 runs off 25 balls, with the help of four fours and a six. Ryan Parag also returned soon after, but Tilak Verma and Gaikwad held their own. Tilak, contrary to his style, played patiently and scored 39 runs off 58 balls, hitting just two fours. The two shared an 89-run partnership for the third wicket. Ishan Kishan also managed only 17 runs off 21 balls.
