IND vs NZ: India Set for Crucial White-Ball Series vs New Zealand Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
The Indian cricket team will get ready for the T20 World Cup 2026 with a white-ball series against New Zealand, the BCCI announced on Saturday, June 14. The series will include 8 matches – three ODIs and five T20Is – against the Black Caps. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the T20I side for this series, which will take place from January 21 to 31. It will be an important part of India’s final preparations for the World Cup, set to be held in February and March in India and Sri Lanka.
A total of eight venues across India will host matches, since the T20 World Cup is also being held in the country. The ODI series against New Zealand will kick off on January 11 in Baroda, while the T20I series will start on January 21 in Nagpur and wrap up on January 31 in Trivandrum.
It’s going to be a busy end to the year for Team India. After playing a two-Test series at home, the white-ball squad will head to Australia for three ODIs and five T20Is. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Test and T20I cricket fans in Australia will be excited to see them in action one more time. After that, India will host World Test Champions South Africa for a full series – two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. The final leg of India’s preparation for the T20 World Cup will be the home series against New Zealand
New Zealand’s Busy Calendar May Affect Squad Availability
Although the exact dates for the T20 World Cup 2026 haven't been confirmed yet, the ICC has locked in a February–March window. But with SA20 running from December 26 to January 26 and the ILT20 from December 2 to January 4 some New Zealand players might miss the series. Before that, New Zealand will also play a full home series against West Indies in November–December.
For India, though, this series will be a great chance to finalise their playing combinations, especially with the World Cup squad deadline likely set for mid-January. The five T20Is will give skipper Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir a valuable opportunity to sort out the playing XI and plug a few gaps.
