ICC Fines India 5% for Slow Over-Rate in Women’s World Cup 2025 vs Australia
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined India five percent of their match fee for a slow over-rate during their ICC Women’s World Cup group match against Australia in Visakhapatnam on Sunday (October 12). India, the defending champions, won the game with a record chase of 331 runs, beating Australia by three wickets with one over left.
India were ruled to be one over short of their required rate after time allowances were taken into account. The decision was made by Michell Periera from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As stated in Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with slow over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over their team fails to complete within the set time.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur accepted the penalty and admitted to the slow over-rate offence, so no formal hearing was needed. The charge was brought by on-field umpires Sue Redfern and Nimali Perera with Kim Cotton acting as the third umpire and Jacquline Williams serving as the fourth official.
Alyssa Healy Leads from the Front with 142 Runs
Even with the penalty, the match was one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Australia put on a brilliant batting show, chasing down India’s big total of 330, the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history. Captain Alyssa Healy led from the front with a superb 142 runs from just 107 balls, her sixth career century and first as captain. She reached her hundred in 84 balls hitting 21 fours and 3 sixes to set the pace for the chase.
Healy’s wicket came after a stunning one-handed diving catch by Sneh Rana at backward point, giving India a small chance with Australia still needing 55 runs. But experienced all-rounder Ellyse Perry, who had earlier retired hurt during her bowling in the 24th over, came back to bat and guided Australia to victory with an unbeaten 47 runs from 52 balls.
For India, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana kept up her amazing form, becoming the first player in women’s ODIs to score 1,000 runs in a single year. Her smooth innings helped India post a strong total, but it wasn’t enough to stop Australia from making history.
