Here’s what Pakistan need to qualify after the washout against New Zealand
Pakistan saw their first Super Eights game against New Zealand washed out due to persistent rain in Colombo. As a result, both teams shared one point each and now have two more games to determine their fate in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Win all the games
The simplest path for Pakistan is to win both of their remaining fixtures. Doing so, they will finish with five points, just one more than what either Sri Lanka or England could get to. With two wins against England and Sri Lanka, they can easily make the second spot, or first, depending upon other teams’ results, and secure qualification for the semi-finals.
Rain or defeats will take things out of Pakistan’s hands
In case Pakistan lose one of those matches, they will have to rely on the net run rate and other things going their way. Similarly, even if one of their games gets abandoned due to rain, qualification would no longer be in their hands alone.
However, if Pakistan fail to win both their remaining matches, they will be eliminated, with the two table toppers proceeding to the semi-finals. Additionally, with their disqualification, the first semi-final, which is to be hosted in Colombo only if Pakistan remain in the tournament, will be shifted to Kolkata. In that scenario, Sri Lanka would not host either a semi-final or the final.
