GT vs RCB Catch Controversy: Why Rajat Patidar Was Given Out on Jason Holder’s Disputed Catch

However, the dismissal of Rajat Patidar through an amazing catch from Jason Holder in the GT vs RCB game has left many spectators in confusion. It occurred during the 8th over when Patidar attempted a pull shot but ended up hitting a top edge.

Jason Holder’s Catch Decision Against Rajat Patidar Sparks Debate in GT vs RCB

The ball flew up into the air, and Jason Holder sprinted fast to catch it. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada was also coming to catch it and almost collided with Holder. Many viewers thought that the ball had dropped, but somehow Holder managed to catch it using just one hand.

Patidar began to walk back to his position, but he stopped when he saw the ball on the replay screen. Obviously, the RCB team was upset, and Virat Kohli's body language indicated that too. Even their coach Andy Flower spoke to the umpires about it. What makes this situation puzzling is the fact that the ball appeared to have hit the ground, meaning it would be ruled not out.

As per the laws by the Marylebone Cricket Club, what matters is control. If the fielder is in control of the ball, the catch is still valid even if it touches the ground.

“The ball is held in the hand or hands of a fielder, even if the hand holding the ball is touching the ground, or is hugged to the body, or lodges in the external protective equipment worn by a fielder, or lodges accidentally in a fielder’s clothing,”

Here, the ball touched the ground but stayed in Holder’s hand the whole time. He didn’t lose control. That’s why the third umpire gave it out. So, even if it looked doubtful, the decision was actually correct according to the rules.
