Gautam Gambhir's Approach to Team India's Transition Sparks Controversy
The Indian team's head coach Gautam Gambhir and his support staff are getting a lot of attention because the Indian cricket team is struggling to perform well in recent matches. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are usually amazing players, are not doing as well as they normally do. Because the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is going on they're all working very hard to think through the strongest team combination to face Australia, who are also practicing their skills a lot.
Since Gambhir took over the head coach position in July, it seems senior players often don't know why they were not included in the group. This adds to the problems on the field, as there are quiet talks of disagreement behind the scenes. Communication within the team isn't smooth anymore, a major change from when coaches like Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri were in charge.
Rohit’s Captaincy Under Pressure
Although Rohit Sharma mentions he speaks to the players individually about who gets picked for the team, Gambhir reportedly has a hard time agreeing with several of the players. Gambhir's habit of saying what he thinks a lot hasn't really helped him bond with the team. As for Rohit, his not doing a good job in many games is basically making it hard for him in his role as the captain.
A senior BCCI official shared, anonymously, "If the performance doesn't improve in the Champions Trophy, even Gambhir's position might be in question."
Some players are feeling very uncertain because Gambhir keeps reconfiguring the team a lot. Also, what's happening with how Shubman Gill is being treated, It's all a big problem. And despite Nitish Reddy doing well lately, people still can't think through Gambhir's dealings with those who pick the team.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is in a leadership transition. Jay Shah, who has taken on the ICC chief's role, was making key decisions for the Board. Roger Binny, the current president, hasn't yet stepped into policy-making. Once the Board achieves administrative stability, further decisions about Gambhir's future are expected.
VVS Laxman Was the Original Choice
If India fails to deliver in the Champions Trophy scheduled for February or March, Gambhir could face restrictions on his role. According to the BCCI official, "He was not the first choice for head coach, it was VVS Laxman. But since top overseas coaches didn't want to handle all three formats, Gambhir became the compromise candidate for head coach position."
Gambhir's situation was not looking good after India lost 0-3 to New Zealand at home, and it could become even worse if things don't go well in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. There are people who think Gambhir ought to just concentrate on leading the T20 team.
A former cricketer from India mentioned, "Gautam went through the same struggles in his career. He should use that experience to guide Kohli more effectively"
The BCCI is closely watching an individual gaining attention for his behavior, his actions have sparked conversations, especially with the ongoing series in Australia. With the current challenges, the upcoming matches and tournaments are crucial for both the team and Gambhir's future as head coach.
