ECB subtly dismiss Pakistan players’ The Hundred snub report
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been at the receiving end of backlash after a BBC report revealed that Pakistan players are unlikely to be signed by teams owned fully or partially by IPL owners for the upcoming season of The Hundred.
67 Pakistan players in the registered players list
However, an ECB spokesperson mentioned Pakistan players following the release of the registered players list for the tournament ahead of the auction on March 11 and 12. The list includes 67 Pakistan players, notably including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Saim Ayub and Shadab Khan.
"The Hundred welcomes men's and women's players from all over the world and we would expect the eight teams to reflect that.
"Almost 1,000 cricketers from 18 nations have registered for The Hundred auction, with representation on the longlist of over 50 players each from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and West Indies."
Vaughan pushes ECB for quick action
However, former England captain Michael Vaughan has urged the board to act swiftly on the matter instead of making "wishy-washy statements". Vaughan expressed concern that this practice could affect English players of Pakistani heritage as well, impacting a significant cohort of senior-level players.
Pakistan cricketers have not participated in the Indian Premier League since 2008 following the terror attacks in Mumbai. Since the IPL owners' global expansion, with team owners forming offshoots of their teams across several franchise leagues, Pakistan players have hardly, if ever, featured for an IPL-owned team.
The Hundred was privatised last year after the ECB ran the league in-house for five seasons. IPL owners now have partial or full stakes in as many as four Hundred teams, including MI London (Mumbai Indians), Manchester Super Giants (Lucknow Super Giants), Sunrisers Leeds (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Southern Brave (Delhi Capitals).
