Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) Method Explained: How Rain Affects Cricket Matches
All matches will use the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. If a match is interrupted and the number of overs changes, the new target will be calculated using the latest ICC Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Calculator, following its instructions. Whenever possible, a backup should be available in case of computer problems. If the computer is unavailable or fails and no backup exists, the older Duckworth-Lewis Standard Edition (used before October 2003) will be applied.
The Duckworth-Lewis (D-L) method sets new targets in rain-affected limited-overs matches based on the resources available to each team, not just the number of overs left. Resources depend on overs remaining and wickets lost at the time of interruption.
To calculate revised targets, you check the resources each team has at the pause and resumption of play. All possible values have been pre-calculated and are listed in a table, showing percentages of resources for a full 50-over innings.
How the target is adjusted:
If Team 2 (batting second) has fewer resources than Team 1, their target is lowered proportionally.
If Team 1’s innings was interrupted and Team 2 has more resources, the target is raised. The extra runs are calculated using the extra resource percentage multiplied by the average total score for a 50-over innings (G50).
G50 values:
Full ICC member or first-class matches: 245
Lower levels (U19, U15, women’s internationals, associate nations): 200
The team batting first is called Team 1 and the team batting second is Team 2.
Decimal fractions of an over in the table use standard cricket notation: 4.3 overs = 4 overs + 3 balls.
The terms “target” and “revised target” only refer to the minimum score Team 2 needs to win.
If Team 2 finishes one run short of the target and match is tied just like in a normal game.
Symbols used:
N = number of overs per innings (set at the start of the match)
S = Team 1’s total score
R1 = Team 1’s resources (as a % of a 50-over innings)
R2 = Team 2’s resources (as a % of a 50-over innings)
T = Team 2’s target score
