The future of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has sparked significant discussion, especially as the October 31 deadline for player retentions approaches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently released retention guidelines, stating that Indian players who haven't participated in international matches for at least five years will be classified as uncapped players.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has the option to retain the legendary wicketkeeper-batter for INR 4 crore. Dhoni, who announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020, last represented India in July 2019.
In light of ongoing speculation, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed on October 20 that the franchise hopes Dhoni will play at least one more season. "We want Dhoni to continue with CSK. However, he has not given us a definitive answer yet. He mentioned, 'I will tell you before October 31.' We remain optimistic," Viswanathan stated at an event, as reported by Sports Vikatan.
Unlike previous seasons, when Dhoni was more forthcoming about his return, he has been notably reserved regarding his IPL future this time. Last month, the 43-year-old hinted that he would make a decision following the announcement of retention rules.
According to the new retention guidelines, each of the 10 IPL teams can retain up to six players, with no restrictions on nationality, and can include one uncapped player.
