Cricket Australia CEO Expresses Strong Desire to See Virat Kohli Play in the BBL
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said they’re still talking with the BCCI about allowing Indian male players to play in the Big Bash League. He mentioned that the BBL is probably the second or third biggest T20 league in the world and added that he would love to see star Indian batter Virat Kohli take part in it one day.
Why Can’t Indian Men Play in Overseas T20 Leagues?
There’s been an ongoing debate about the BCCI’s rule that stops Indian male cricketers from playing in overseas T20 leagues, while female players are allowed to take part. Many people feel this rule is unfair and question why there’s a different rule for men and women.
Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah Rodrigues have been regular faces in the WBBL, playing in the league year after year.
“We would love to welcome some Indian players to the BBL. That’s certainly some conversations that we will continue to have with the BCCI I would love to see Virat Kohli playing in the BBL this year," Greenberg said while speaking to the media during an interaction organised by Cricket Australia.
“That would certainly create some interest in crowds and ratings, I’m sure, but at the moment, that’s not happening, but we do have our ambitions to do those types of things," Greenberg added.
No Overseas Leagues for Indian Players
The BCCI doesn’t allow Indian players to take part in overseas leagues because it wants to protect the value and importance of its own tournaments, especially the IPL. They believe this helps keep domestic cricket strong and focused. BCCI wants to ensure that domestic cricket, including the Ranji Trophy, remains strong as a feeder system for international players as well. Other leagues might not be able to offer the same level of compensation that the Indian Premier League provides.
Many international T20 leagues are held at the same time as India’s domestic cricket season, which makes it hard for players to take part in both. The Big Bash League presumably begins from the third week of December, towards the end of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s premier domestic T20 tournament.
