Chinnaswamy Stadium to Host IPL 2026 Matches, Karnataka Deputy CM Confirms
D.K. Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, has confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches will not be moved from M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He confirmed that every scheduled IPL game in 2026 would take place at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, December 7, while voting in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections was underway.
Shivakumar confirms IPL 2026 matches will stay at Chinnaswamy Stadium
When asked whether he was concerned about the possibility of major matches such as IPL games being moved away from M. Chinnaswamy following the recent events that unfolded during celebrations after RCB won the IPL championship, D.K. Shivakumar stated there was no such concern.
When asked about the possibility of Karnataka hosting any of the Women's T20 World Cup matches, he reiterated that the Karnataka government and other authorities will provide for all those matches and ensure that the state will be prepared and secure to host all significant cricketing events.
"This is a matter of respect for the state of Karnataka and Bengaluru. We will take steps to ensure that the next IPL matches are held here. We will allow whatever matches are available in the coming days,” said Shivakumar as quoted by Tribune.
Shivakumar, who has been a cricket fan for many years, expressed his confidence in M. Chinnaswamy Stadium's ability to host significant tournaments. He also stated that the state government is currently in the process of developing a larger, alternative cricket stadium in the Bengaluru area for future needs and requirements related to infrastructure and crowd control.
After 17 years without a title, RCB finally got their hands on one after a high-profile win in 2007. Thousands of fans flocked to the Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate this momentous occasion, but unfortunately, the celebrations were marred by overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and poor communication, leading to deaths and numerous injuries.
"I am a member of the KSCA. When I was young, Nagaraj gave me a membership. His son is my classmate. I know many people from Brijesh Patel, including Anil Kumble and Prasanna. I voted for the ones I wanted,” said Shivakumar.
The IPL 2026 auction takes place on December 16 in Abu Dhabi and is the third year it will be held outside India. Unlike in previous mega auctions, the 2026 auction will follow a mini auction format, meaning that it will be completed on the same day as the auctions. The IPL has already seen some big-name players released by the reigning champions ahead of the auction. England all-rounder Liam Livingstone was let go after a lack of consistent playing time during the 2020 season.
"I am a cricket fan. We will take care that the recent disaster does not happen again and ensure that the stadium's dignity remains. The stadium will be developed by managing the crowd within the legal framework. In addition, we will build a bigger stadium as an alternative," he added.
Along with Livingstone, RCB has released South African pace bowler Lungi Ngidi, who was primarily used off the bench during the previous season. Similarly, the squad has parted ways with Tim Seifert from New Zealand and Blessing Muzarabani from Zimbabwe in order to reconfigure their overseas roster for the 2021 season.
