Cheteshwar Pujara Critiques Virat Kohli's Costly Error in Perth Test's First Innings

In the ongoing series down under, Virat Kohli's struggles in Test cricket have continued, raising eyebrows among fans and the Indian team management. Expectations were high for Kohli's resurgence in Australia, a region where he has historically thrived. However, the second Test in Perth added another chapter to his recent batting woes.

In the first innings, Kohli faced a mere 12 deliveries, managing just 5 runs before falling prey to an aggressive delivery from Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood. The delivery, which rose sharply, was expertly caught by Usman Khawaja, sending the Indian skipper back to the pavilion and leaving India in a precarious position.

Cheteshwar Pujara, Kohli’s teammate and a stalwart in India’s Test squad, offered an incisive analysis of Kohli's dismissal. Speaking on Star Sports, Pujara pointed out a critical flaw in Kohli's approach. "Virat should have positioned himself deeper in the crease rather than standing so far out. This stance limited his ability to adjust to the rising delivery," Pujara noted. He added, "Hazlewood astutely observed Kohli's stance and exploited the pitch's bounce to full effect. Had Virat been positioned further back, he might have had the room to manage the delivery, but he was left cramped for space as the ball approached."

This dismissal adds to a troubling pattern for Kohli, who has struggled to convert his starts into significant scores. In the preceding series against New Zealand, he accumulated only 93 runs across six innings, a far cry from his usual prolific standards. Alarmingly, Kohli has recorded just three Test centuries over the past five years, a statistic that underscores his ongoing challenges in the longest format of the game.

Kohli's form is a focal point for the Indian team, which relies heavily on his experience and batting prowess. While his leadership qualities and past performances have been pivotal for India, the current slump necessitates adjustments to reclaim his standing as one of the world's premier batsmen.

India will be hoping for a turnaround, not just from Kohli but from the entire batting unit, as they continue their challenging tour of Australia. The series is pivotal, not only for the ICC World Test Championship standings but also for the morale of a team looking to assert its dominance on foreign soil.
