Champions Trophy Standings: New Zealand Dominate as Pakistan Falters in Opening Match
New Zealand secured a thumping 60-run win in the Champions Trophy opener on Wednesday. New Zealand, batting first, posted 320 on the board courtesy of Will Young and Tom Latham’s superlative efforts, while Pakistan could only get as far as 260, where New Zealand’s bowlers dominated.
Pakistan's skipper, Mohammad Rizwan, won the toss and chose to bowl first. Abrar Ahmed took Devon Conway for just 10 runs, and Naseem Shah followed up by dismissing Kane Williamson for a 1 run. New Zealand was in trouble when Daryl Mitchell also fell cheaply, at 40/3.
Will Young played with patience, scoring his fifty in 56 balls. He found solid support in Tom Latham, and together they built a 50-run partnership. They helped New Zealand cross the 150-run mark by the 31st over.
Young and Latham's century leads to 320
Once settled, Young and Latham capitalized on the platform they built, frustrating the Pakistani bowlers. Young smashed a well-crafted 107 before falling, but Latham continued his charge, scoring a fluent 118* off 95 balls. Glenn Phillips provided the late fireworks with a quickfire 61 off 39 deliveries, helping New Zealand post a daunting 320/5.
Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf picked up two wickets each, but both were expensive, with Rauf conceding 83 runs in his 10-over spell.
Pakistan Falter in Run Chase Despite Babar and Salman’s Efforts
Pakistan’s chase got off to a bad start as Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan were out early at 22/2 after 10 overs. With the pressure mounting, Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman (24) tried to rebuild, but Fakhar’s stay was short-lived.
Babar Azam gave his best, batting 90 deliveries for his 64 runs while his partner Salman Agha was aggressive with a 28-ball 42-run knock.
Khushdil Shah played a gutsy innings of 69 off 49 balls, offering Pakistan a glimmer of hope. But with wickets tumbling at the other end, his lone effort wasn’t enough to pull off a miracle. Haris Rauf chipped in with some late runs (19 off 10), but Pakistan were bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs.
New Zealand’s bowlers, William O’Rourke took 3 wickets and captain Mitchell Santner also took 3 wickets.
