Champions Trophy 2025: Babar Azam Joins Elite List with 1000 Runs in ICC ODI Tournaments
Babar Azam made history during the league match of the 2025 Champions Trophy against India. The Pakistan opener scored 23 runs off 26 balls before getting out. He started well and was playing confidently. Hardik Pandya, in his second over, got Babar out when he edged a delivery outside off-stump to KL Rahul behind the wickets. But before his dismissal, Babar reached a big milestone he completed 1000 runs in ICC ODI tournaments.
Babar Azam became the quickest Pakistani batsman to reach 1000 runs in ICC one-day cricket. He achieved this record in 24 innings. Previously, Saeed Anwar was the record holder by completing 25 innings, and Javed Miandad is ranked third.
Babar first played in an ICC one-day match in 2017. He was in the team led by Sarfaraz Ahmed that beat India in the final. He also played in the 2019 ODI World Cup and later became Pakistan’s captain in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Pakistan have not reached the second round of a 50-over World Cup since 2011.
After the 2023 ODI World Cup, Babar stopped being captain. He returned as captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup, but Pakistan were knocked out in the group stage.
In a match in Dubai, after a good start, Pakistan lost two early batsmen. Babar got out for 23, and Imam ul Haq was run out for 10 after trying to score a run. Axar Patel quickly picked up the ball and threw it straight at the stumps, and then Mohammad Rizwan came in with Saud Shakeel after the second player got out. If Pakistan loses this match, their chances in the 2025 Champions Trophy will almost certainly end.
