AUS vs SA T20I: Who Won the Series, Final Result and Highlights
Glenn Maxwell led Australia to a thrilling win against South Africa in the third T20I on Saturday, August 16, at Cazaly's Stadium, Cairns, securing the series 2-1. Maxwell stayed not out at 62* from 36 balls hitting eight fours and two sixes guiding Australia to chase down 173 with just one ball to spare.
Maxwell was named Player of the Match for his crucial knock. Captain Mitchell Marsh also played a key role, scoring 54 off 37 balls, including three fours and five sixes. Australia got off to a solid start with Marsh and Travis Head, who made 19 from 8 balls putting on 66 runs for the first wicket in 48 balls.
South Africa fought back into the game with regular wickets, thanks to Corbin Bosch (3/26), Kagiso Rabada (2/32), and Kwena Maphaka (2/36). Australia seemed to be in control at 142/6 after 16 overs, but Bosch bowled a couple of tight overs including a double-wicket maiden in the penultimate over, which left Australia needing 10 runs from the final six balls.
Brevis’ Explosive Knock Helps South Africa Post a Competitive Total of 172/7
Dewald Brevis picked up right where he left off in the second T20I, scoring another fifty-plus. He came in after Lhuan-dre Pretorius’ wicket fell, leaving South Africa at 32/2. Brevis quickly settled in and wasted no time, smashing a huge 100-meter six over deep backward square leg off Ben Dwarshius.
Dewald Brevis continued to dominate, taking on Josh Hazlewood and moving into the 20s with a boundary and his second six of the over. However, it was Aaron Hardie who felt the full force of Brevis’ attack, as the 22-year-old hammered him for four straight sixes to bring up his half-century off just 22 balls.
Brevis then put on a 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Tristan Stubbs (25 off 23), pushing South Africa's score past 100. Just as Brevis (53 off 26) looked to build on his innings and eye another century, Nathan Ellis (3/31) came to Australia's rescue, surprising him with a slower bouncer, which Brevis hit straight to Glenn Maxwell at long on.
After Brevis' dismissal, Rassie van der Dussen (38* off 26) provided a solid finish for the Proteas, guiding them to 172/7 in 20 overs. With the T20I series wrapped up, both teams will now face off in a three-match ODI series starting on August 19.
