Agha downplays Pakistan’s fast bowling concerns
Salman Ali Agha has led Pakistan into the Super Eights, marking the first time since the 2022 T20 World Cup that they have survived beyond the group stage of an ICC event. Pakistan have won three of their four matches so far, with their only defeat coming against India.
Are Pakistan overrelying on spin?
Yet the results have not entirely covered concerns under the surface that could sprout against stronger opposition during the Super Eights. One of those is Pakistan’s very noticeable reliance on spin, both in this tournament and more broadly.
In their match against India, Pakistan became the first team to use six spinners in a single T20 World Cup game. Across four matches in this edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, they have bowled almost four times as many overs of spin as pace.
However, Salman dismissed the concerns that this overreliance is due to Pakistan’s dwindling fast bowling stocks.
Trial by spin strategy
Speaking after the win over Namibia, he said that the heavy use of spin was a tactical decision tailored to Sri Lankan conditions rather than necessity.
"We have the luxury of spinners, allrounders who can bat and bowl. We also have proper match winners when it comes to spin bowling. If you have that many spin bowlers in Sri Lanka, you don't really need to bowl fast bowlers in the middle. If we need to, we have the bowlers who can do that, but right now we're fine bowling with the spinners."
Pakistan will open their Super Eights campaign against New Zealand, and Salman suggested they would look to test them with spin as well.
"I think we have been playing very good cricket, as has New Zealand. So I'm hoping for a good game. If we replicate the way we're playing right now, I think we'll be fine."
