Afghanistan Coach Jonathan Trott Likely to Exit After 2026 T20 World Cup Triumphs

Jonathan Trott, the head coach of the Afghanistan cricket team, is expected to step down after the T20 World Cup in 2026. Trott took over as coach in July 2022 and had his contract extended in December 2024 following a strong run with the team.
According to The Cricketer, Trott is likely to leave his role after the tournament, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka next year. His departure would mark the end of a coaching stint that lasted nearly four years. Trott had been roped in by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in 2022 initially for an 18-month stint. The contract was renewed in January 2024 and that extension was further followed by another one later in the year.
Jonathan Trott Likely to Step Down as Afghanistan Head Coach After 2026 T20 World Cup
Afghanistan has done really well with Trott as their coach. In the 2024 T20 World Cup, they reached the semi-finals for the first time. They also had two big wins, one against New Zealand in the group stage and another against Australia in the Super Eight. They did not let their momentum slip, registering back-to-back ODI series victories against South Africa (2-1) in September 2024 and Bangladesh (3-0) in October 2025 in the United Arab Emirates.
Afghanistan reached an important milestone by qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy. They earned their spot by finishing among the top eight teams in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Their strong performance in that tournament included memorable wins over some big teams, they beat England by 69 runs, Pakistan by eight wickets, and Sri Lanka by seven wickets. For Trott, the Afghanistan head coach stint was his first in the coaching space. Prior to this, he was a Scotland's batting consultant during the 2021 T20 World Cup. Trott could be expected to ply his trade with either international teams or the domestic franchises.
