AB de Villiers Questions Gautam Gambhir’s Impact on Sanju Samson’s T20I Success

In the recent spotlight of Indian cricket, Sanju Samson has been making waves with his astounding performance in T20 Internationals, scoring two consecutive centuries. While Samson attributed his success to the guidance of Gautam Gambhir, former South African captain AB de Villiers has expressed a differing view.

Samson etched his name in the record books by becoming the first Indian to achieve back-to-back hundreds in T20Is. His remarkable innings began with a century against Bangladesh, followed by another stellar performance against South Africa. Filling in as an opener due to the absence of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Samson has proven to be an unstoppable force on the field.

However, De Villiers, a legend in his own right, has voiced skepticism regarding the influence of the coaching staff, including Gambhir, on Samson's recent achievements. In a statement, he emphasized the maturation of Samson as a cricketer, suggesting that his personal growth and understanding of the game are pivotal factors in his success.

"Sanju Samson has elevated his game to a new level, and I hope the selectors are considering him for all formats," said De Villiers. "He is exceptionally talented and capable of delivering in any conditions worldwide. I doubt that the coaching staff significantly influenced his outstanding batting."

Despite his reservations about crediting the coaches, De Villiers was careful to express respect for the coaching figures involved, including Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Morne Morkel, and Ryan ten Doeschate. "I don't want to diminish their roles, but I believe Sanju has matured and understands the importance of consistent performance."

Interestingly, Samson was part of India's T20 World Cup 2024 winning squad, though he did not play during the tournament. Before his recent centuries, he had already showcased his potential with two half-centuries, hinting at the form that would soon make headlines.
