Delhi Capitals are a franchise cricket team that has participated in every Indian Premier League (IPL) season since the league's inception in 2008. Originally named Delhi Daredevils, the team rebranded to Delhi Capitals in December 2018. Co-owner Parth Jindal stated the new name reflects Delhi's status as the nation's power centre .
The team's historical performance includes semi-final appearances in 2008 and 2009, followed by inconsistent results. They reached their first final in 2020, finishing as runners-up to Mumbai Indians. Under Rishabh Pant, they topped the league stage in 2021 but lost in the qualifiers. From 2022 to 2024, they were eliminated in the group stage.
In IPL 2025, Delhi Capitals finished 5th in the league stage with 15 points (7 wins, 6 losses, 1 no-result), narrowly missing the playoffs . Their campaign was marked by a strong start—winning five of their first six matches—followed by a decline in form . Prithvi Shaw was their top run-scorer (408 runs), while Kuldeep Yadav led the bowling attack with 16 wickets .
Ahead of IPL 2026, the franchise retained Axar Patel as captain and Hemang Badani as head coach . At the auction, they strengthened their squad by signing key overseas players including David Miller, Ben Duckett, Pathum Nissanka, and Lungi Ngidi. Their most notable acquisition was uncapped Indian all-rounder Auqib Nabi Dar, secured for ₹8.40 crore .
The franchise is co-owned by the GMR Group and JSW Group. Starting from the 2025 season, the two groups agreed to manage the team's cricketing operations on a rotational basis, with GMR overseeing the men's IPL team for the 2025-2026 cycle . As of 2026, the brand value of Delhi Capitals is estimated to be $152 million .
Prominent players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, AB de Villiers, and David Warner have represented the franchise over the years.
