Which team has the most abandoned T20I matches?
Pakistan’s Super Eights fixture against New Zealand was washed out due to persistent rain in Colombo, forcing the two teams to share one point each. But washouts aren’t a new thing for Pakistan.
Among all the teams, Pakistan have had the most abandoned games, matches where rain did not allow even a single ball to be bowled, followed closely by Ireland and New Zealand.
Teams with Most Abandoned T20I Matches:
Pakistan – 7 matches
Ireland – 6 matches
New Zealand – 6 matches
India – 4 matches
Netherlands – 4 matches
All of Pakistan's abandoned T20I matches have come since 2020, though this was their first T20 World Cup match to be washed out.
Colombo rain abandons Pakistan’s game
Pakistan could only enter the field for the toss, which they won and decided to bat first. However, shortly after, heavy rain returned, and the entire Colombo ground was covered.
In a T20I game, for a result to be declared, a minimum of five overs per side needs to be bowled. However, by 9:45 PM local time, which was the cut-off time, not a single ball had been bowled. This led to the cancellation of the game.
Pakistan have two more Super Eights games left, against England and Sri Lanka. Winning both games remains crucial for their survival, as even one loss or another washout could take things out of their hands.
