VVS Laxman Takes Over as Interim India Coach in Gambhir’s Absence
VVS Laxman will take charge of the Indian cricket team while Gautam Gambhir is away. Gambhir, the head coach, had to return home earlier this week to be with his unwell mother. Laxman, who leads the Centre of Excellence (earlier called the National Cricket Academy), will step in during his absence.
Right now, Shubman Gill’s Team India is playing a 4-day practice match among themselves in Beckenham. VVS Laxman, who is also the head coach of India’s Under-19 and A teams, is already in England. As per RevSportz, he will step in for Gautam Gambhir and look after the team until Gambhir comes back.
Laxman Steps In as Interim Coach While Gambhir Is Away
Laxman is currently with the India U19 team, which includes promising players like Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The U19 side is scheduled to play seven matches against England U19 between June 17 and July 23. Since these matches are also in England, Laxman happened to be there at the same time as the senior Indian team.
He has already stepped in as India’s head coach before and has worked closely with most of the players through his roles at the NCA, India A, and the U19 team. So, handling the senior team for now shouldn’t be a problem for him.
As for Gambhir’s return, it’s expected that he’ll return by June 20, the day that the India vs England 1st Test starts in Birmingham.
