Sri Lanka Selects Embuldeniya and Oshada Fernando for Crucial South Africa Tests

Sri Lanka Selects Embuldeniya and Oshada Fernando for Crucial South Africa Tests

In a strategic move, Sri Lanka has recalled left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya for their upcoming Test series against South Africa, marking his return to the format after a hiatus of over two years. This decision underscores Sri Lanka's intent to leverage spin-friendly conditions in Durban and Gqeberha, venues that tend to offer more turn as matches progress. Notably, offspinner Nishan Peiris, who debuted in Tests against New Zealand in September, also finds a place in the squad.

While Prabath Jayasuriya remains the spearhead of the spin department, Embuldeniya's inclusion represents a tactical shake-up for the Sri Lankan side. The selection panel's decision is influenced by Embuldeniya’s past performances in South Africa, where he took six wickets at an average of 23.83 during Sri Lanka's 2019 tour. His performances in the four-day National Super League also contributed to his recall, even though his domestic season was less stellar.

The batting and seam-bowling sections of the squad remain largely predictable. Key fast bowlers like Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, and Kasun Rajitha, alongside allrounder Milan Rathnayake, bolster the pace attack. In the batting lineup, Oshada Fernando has been included, reflecting confidence in his previous exploits in South Africa. During the 2019 tour, Oshada's unbeaten 75 in the fourth innings was instrumental in securing a memorable win alongside Kusal Mendis. Despite a promising start in ODIs, Nishan Madushka has not been selected for this series.

Chief selector Pramodya Wickramasinghe commented, "We have chosen players with experience and proven track records in South African conditions. Both Embuldeniya and Oshada have shown their mettle previously, and their selection is aimed at balancing the squad."

The series holds significant importance as Sri Lanka looks to assert its prowess on foreign soil. The team's composition indicates a blend of experience and adaptability, crucial for tackling the challenges posed by the South African pitches.
