Shane Watson Named Assistant Coach of Kolkata Knight Riders Ahead of IPL 2026
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have named Shane Watson as their new assistant coach ahead of the IPL 2026 season. The three-time IPL champions are making big changes before the tournament starts. This comes soon after KKR appointed Abhishek Nayar as their head coach, with the player retention deadline set for November 15.
Watson’s IPL journey began in the first season when he won the title with Rajasthan Royals (RR) and was named Player of the Tournament. He earned the same award again in 2013. Later, he won the IPL 2018 title with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he scored a brilliant century in the final.
Abhishek Nayar and Shane Watson: A Young Coaching Duo to Lead KKR
Nayar replaced Chandrakant Pandit, who joined the team in 2022 and won the IPL 2024 alongside Gautam Gambhir, who was the mentor at that time and Shreyas Iyer, who was the captain. Having failed to qualify for the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, Kolkata were desperate for a course correction.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore said, “We are very happy to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as a top player and coach will be a great addition to our team. He understands the T20 game very well, and we are excited about the value he will bring both on and off the field.”
With Watson joining Nayar, KKR now have two young coaches who can bring a strong T20 mindset to the team. The squad already has plenty of talent, with Indian players like Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, and Harshit Rana, along with overseas stars Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. One major focus will be on Venkatesh Iyer, who earns a big ₹23.75 crore salary, which could play a key role in shaping KKR’s IPL 2026 auction plans.
