Rohit Sharma to Discuss Retirement Plans with Ajit Agarkar Post Champions Trophy Final; Virat Kohli’s Future Unclear

Rohit Sharma to Discuss Retirement Plans with Ajit Agarkar Post Champions Trophy Final; Virat Kohli’s Future UnclearRumors are spreading about the ODI future of India captain Rohit Sharma as he prepares to lead his team in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy today in Dubai against New Zealand. Rohit, one of the players who has represented India, is aiming for his second ICC trophy as captain after winning the T20 World Cup last year.

According to news agency PTI, Rohit is expected to have important discussions with chief selector Ajit Agarkar after India finishes their Champions Trophy campaign.

After the ICC tournament, India’s next ODI series will be during the white-ball tour of Bangladesh (three ODIs) in August, followed by three ODIs in Australia and a home series against South Africa in December. India will also begin their next ICC World Test Championship cycle (2025-27) with a tour of England in June this year.

When India’s ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill was asked about discussions on Rohit’s future, he said, “So far, we have only been talking about winning the match and the Champions Trophy. He has not mentioned anything to me or the team about this decision (retirement). I don’t think Rohit is considering it."

Since making his debut in 2007, Rohit has played 272 ODIs, scoring 11,092 runs at an average of 48.64. He has 32 centuries and 57 half-centuries to his name.

Regarding his captaincy record, the 37-year-old has led India in 55 ODIs, winning 41 and losing 12. One match ended in a tie, while another had no result.

Rohit fulfilled his dream of winning a world title as captain in 2024 when India defeated South Africa in the final to claim the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Barbados. However, shortly after the victory, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, he announced his retirement from T20Is.
