Ricky Ponting Highlights Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer in Punjab Kings' Retention Strategy
Ricky Ponting, the newly appointed head coach of Punjab Kings, has revealed the franchise's strategy for player retention ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. On October 31, franchises announced their retention lists, with Punjab opting to keep only two uncapped players, Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh. This decision allows them to enter the auction with significant funds and a fresh perspective on team building.
Ponting's bold approach sees the release of international stars like Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran, and Arshdeep Singh as the Kings aim for a transformative season. In an interview with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review, he expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to rebuild the team.
"I'm thrilled about starting anew. Today's retention list marks the beginning of that journey. With only two uncapped players retained and the largest budget, we have the freedom to construct a complete squad," said Ponting.
He emphasized his vision for the Punjab Kings, a team that hasn't made the IPL playoffs since 2014, aiming to implement a new style of cricket. "With new coaching staff, my priority is to change the franchise fundamentally. I want to see tangible results and for us to become the most dynamic and entertaining team," he concluded.
