Remembering Zubeen Garg: 40-Minute Tribute Planned for World Cup 2025 Kickoff

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has revealed that the opening ceremony of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 will include a special tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg. Zubeen recently passed away in Singapore after a tragic scuba diving accident. He was widely loved for popularizing Assamese music across India and is especially remembered for his hit song 'Ya Ali' from the 2006 film Gangster.
BCCI Plans Special Tribute to Zubeen Garg at Women’s World Cup Opening Ceremony
To pay tribute to the legendary singer, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) will host special performances in his memory during the opening ceremony of the Women’s World Cup on September 30 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
“The youth icon, musical legend, and cultural symbol of Assam, Zubeen Garg, has sadly passed away. His mortal remains have arrived in Guwahati today, Assam is currently engulfed in deep grief and sorrow over this tragic loss. In light of this situation and in honour of a person who truly deserves our deepest respect, the Assam Cricket Association along with BCCI is planning a tribute during the opening ceremony of the Women’s World Cup,” Saikia told India Today.
He also said that the list of artists will be finalised soon and shared that Shreya Ghoshal will be performing at the opening ceremony.
“We are currently working on the arrangements and trying to include a segment dedicated to Zubeen Garg. Final details regarding the artist lineup will be confirmed by this evening. However, a 40-minute program in his memory is being planned, and Shreya Ghoshal, who was already scheduled to perform, will also be part of the tribute,” he added.
The Women’s World Cup 2025 will start on September 30 with India playing Sri Lanka in the first match. This will be the third time India is hosting the tournament, after 1997 and 2013.
Before the World Cup, India lost a three-match ODI series against Australia 2-1. The series was tied 1-1, but India lost the last match at Arun Jaitley Stadium by 43 runs. Before the tournament, India will also play two practice matches against New Zealand and England.
