"Bowl to the Batsman, Not the Name’ – Jasprit Bumrah Shares Sachin Tendulkar’s IPL Debut Advice

Jasprit Bumrah is widely seen as one of the best bowlers in the world today, known for changing the course of matches with his sharp bowling and calmness under pressure. He returned to the Mumbai Indians squad later this IPL season after recovering from an injury, and his presence has clearly made the team stronger. Bumrah once shared that when he first joined Mumbai, Sachin Tendulkar gave him a valuable piece of advice he told him to focus more on accuracy than just speed. Bumrah said that this simple tip from the legend played a big role in shaping him into the bowler he is today.

Jasprit Bumrah has really come into his own, becoming one of India’s go‑to bowlers across all three formats and recently joining the elite 200‑Test‑wicket club. Mumbai Indians first spotted his talent in Under‑19 cricket and brought him into their 2013 IPL squad and he’s been on the rise ever since, now widely regarded as one of India’s best-ever bowlers.

Bumrah made a memorable IPL debut for Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he picked up 3 wickets for 32 runs. He made an instant impact by dismissing big names like Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, and Karun Nair giving everyone a glimpse of the match-winner he would soon become. Recently, Jasprit Bumrah shared a special memory from the early days of his career some advice he got from the legendary Sachin Tendulkar before making his debut for Mumbai Indians.

"When I came here (Mumbai Indians), Sachin Tendulkar was still playing. It was his last year. Initially, when a 19-year-old comes into this atmosphere & sees such legends of the game everywhere, the level of cricket is so high and so different from under-19 cricket. I was a little overwhelmed - But when I played my first game, before starting the game, he told me that ‘Don’t look at the individual. Bowl to the batsman, not to the name.’ That helped me quite a lot". Bumrah said.

Playoff-Bound? Mumbai Indians Aim for 7th Win with Bumrah in Red-Hot Form

Mumbai Indians are sitting comfortably in third place on the points table, riding high on a six-match winning streak. With 14 points from 11 games and the best net run rate in the tournament at +1.274, they’re in a strong position heading into the final stretch. With three matches to go, they can still finish with a maximum of 20 points. Today, MI take on Gujarat Titans in a much-anticipated clash at the Wankhede Stadium, where Jasprit Bumrah, who has been in top form, especially at home will be key to their hopes of sealing another win.

Qualification Scenario Mumbai Indians are well-positioned thanks to their outstanding Net Run Rate. One more win will take them to 16 points, which is usually enough to qualify. Two wins (18 points) should guarantee a top-two finish and a place in Qualifier 1. However, they face three fellow playoff contenders — GT, PBKS, and DC — making the run-in a potential minefield. A three-game losing streak could put them at risk if other teams gain momentum.
