Pat Cummins Set to Return for Gabba Pink-Ball Test, Big Boost for Australia
Australia got a big boost before the second Ashes Test of 2025-26, as Pat Cummins is set to return for the day-night match at the Gabba in Brisbane from December 4. Cricket Australia will announce the squad on November 28, and Cummins is almost confirmed to lead the team after missing the eight-wicket win in Perth.
Pat Cummins set to return for Gabba Day-Night Test, strengthening Australia’s Ashes squad
Cummins was earlier feared to miss the whole Ashes series because of a back stress injury, but he has made a strong comeback after weeks of rehab. Reports say it is not sure if he will directly enter the playing XI, but he will be part of the squad for the Pink Ball Test.
Jhye Richardson is also pushing for a place through Australia A, while Cummins’ return gives more strength to the team. Australia is not expected to make many other changes, and the batting order is still not confirmed. Usman Khawaja’s back issue is a concern, while Travis Head’s match-winning century in Perth has added to the selection decisions.
Cummins impressed the selectors by bowling at full pace in the nets over the last few weeks. He trained first in Perth and then at the Cricket NSW facility, where he bowled well with the pink ball. Josh Hazlewood also trained but is unlikely to be fit for the day-night Test due to a hamstring injury.
Fast bowler Brendan Doggett is keeping himself ready in case he is needed. He took five wickets on debut in Perth and hopes to get another chance if Cummins is not fully ready. Doggett said that Cummins looks good in the nets, and he will stay prepared and keep working hard. He added that no talks have happened yet about team changes, and discussions will begin once the team reaches Brisbane on Sunday.
