New Zealand appoints former South Africa coach Rob Walter to replace Gary Stead
New Zealand coach: New Zealand Cricket has picked Rob Walter, the former South Africa coach, to take over from Gary Stead as head coach. The announcement was made on Friday, June 6. Stead stepped down from his role as coach of New Zealand’s white-ball teams on Thursday. The board decided to bring in a new coach to take charge of the team across all three formats, Tests, ODIs, and T20s, for better consistency and direction.
Rob Walter Named New Head Coach of the Blackcaps
Walter took over the role after finishing his time as coach of South Africa's white-ball teams. He stepped down in April this year, right after the Champions Trophy.
While coaching South Africa, Walter helped the team reach the final of the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup in 2023. The 49-year-old is set to begin his new role in mid-June, with his first series being the tour of Zimbabwe in July. He has signed a contract with the Blackcaps that will last until the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.
"New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Rob Walter as the new Head Coach of the BLACKCAPS, effective from mid-June through to the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in October-November 2028," read the statement from New Zealand Cricket.
Walter Honoured and Excited to Lead the Blackcaps Into a New Era
Walter said he feels honoured to become the coach of the Blackcaps and is really excited to begin this new journey.
“The BLACKCAPS have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it’s a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that,” Walter said.
“It’s an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested."
Who is Rob Walter?
Walter is no stranger to New Zealand cricket. Before his South Africa stint, he held coaching roles with Otago Volts and Central Stags, leading the latter to the Ford Trophy and Plunket Shield titles in the 2022–23 season. He also worked with New Zealand A and has been involved in the IPL as an assistant coach.
Walter’s contract means he’ll be leading the Blackcaps through a busy few years. He’ll be in charge during major events like the T20 World Cup in 2026, the ODI World Cup in 2027, the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, another T20 World Cup that same year, and the new World Test Championship cycle.
