Jon Lewis Resigns as Head Coach of England Women’s Cricket Team

Jon Lewis Resigns as Head Coach of England Women’s Cricket TeamJon Lewis has resigned as head coach of the England Women's cricket team with immediate effect on Friday, 21 March. Under his tenure, which began in November 2022, England achieved incredible success, winning 52 out of their 73 games in all formats. This has ranked them as the second-highest ranked team globally in both the ICC ODI and T20I rankings, just behind Australia.

Under Lewis's leadership, England reached the semi-finals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. However, they narrowly fell short of a semi-final berth in the previous edition of the tournament last year underlining both their accomplishments and the fine margins in elite women's cricket.

Jon Lewis's time as England Women's head coach also led the team to secure qualification for the forthcoming ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India. This milestone was achieved thanks to their impressive run in the Women's Championship, where they finished third in the standings, behind only the dominant Australian side and host nation, India.

England Seeks a New Head Coach as World Cup Nears

Moreover, Lewis oversaw a particularly memorable moment in English women's cricket the hard-fought 2023 Women's Ashes series on home soil. The series, which was fought across several formats, ultimately finished as a draw. England is yet to announce Jon Lewis's replacement leaving the post of head coach vacant with the Cricket World Cup nearing. In addition, England is scheduled to play India in a white-ball series in June-July, which will include five T20Is and three ODIs.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as England Women’s Head Coach. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team, whilst winning and growing the women’s game in this country,” Lewis was quoted by the ECB.

“I have worked tirelessly with this group of young players to develop their skills and understanding of modern-day white ball cricket, whilst still making good progress in 2024, winning 83% of all our games. I am proud that we have seen unprecedented bumper crowds in 2023 and 2024 and I am determined to continue to help drive women’s cricket forward in whatever comes next for me. I wish all the players the best and thank them for letting me be part of their journeys,” Lewis added.
