Jamie Smith Doubt Rocks England Ahead of Crucial Second Test vs New Zealand

England's preparations for the second Test against New Zealand have suffered another setback, with wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith emerging as a major doubt for the match at The Oval starting on June 17. The Three Lions are already dealing with the absence of captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, both of whom are serving suspensions after breaching team curfew regulations.

According to reports from The Telegraph, Smith may miss the match as he is expecting the birth of his second child. The 25-year-old is keen to be with his family during the important occasion, although England have not yet provided an official update regarding his availability. Despite the uncertainty, the hosts have already assembled a 14-member squad ahead of the crucial Test.

England's selectors had earlier named Jordan Cox and Jofra Archer as replacements for Stokes and Atkinson. With a gap between the first and second Tests, Cox initially remained with Essex for their County Championship fixture against Leicestershire. The batter made the most of his opportunity by scoring a superb double century in the first innings and further strengthening his case for national selection.

Reports suggest England could make as many as five changes to the side that won the opening Test. Alongside the forced absences of Stokes and Atkinson, three players could be handed Test debuts. Cox is being considered as Smith's replacement, while promising pacer Sonny Baker is in line to replace Atkinson. Young batting sensation James Rew is also reportedly under consideration for a debut appearance.

Meanwhile, Jofra Archer is expected to walk straight into the playing XI after missing the first Test due to workload management following his IPL campaign with the Rajasthan Royals. His return would provide a major boost to England's bowling attack as they look to secure the series.

England currently lead the three-match series 1-0 after registering a convincing 115-run victory in a low-scoring contest at Lord's. A win at The Oval would seal the series for the hosts.
