IND vs SA 2025: Bumrah and Gill Join Test Squad on Sunday After T20I Series in Australia

A busy international calendar has left little room to breathe for india’s core group. Just hours after the T20I series in Australia wrapped up with a rain-hit finish in Brisbane, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar boarded a direct flight to Kolkata to join the Test squad ahead of the first India vs South Africa Test starting November 14 at Eden Gardens.

The four players, who are part of both the limited-overs and Test teams, will reach Kolkata by Sunday evening along with the South African squad. The rest of the Indian Test players, including KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj will arrive on Monday. The team’s first full practice session is planned for Tuesday.

Interestingly, many players from the Test squad like Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, and Akash Deep are already in action for India A against South Africa A. The upcoming Test at Eden Gardens continues India’s home journey in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Earlier this year, India fought hard for a 2-2 draw against England and then clean-swept the West Indies 2-0, giving them solid momentum for the 2025–27 campaign.

India’s quick switch from T20s to Tests is nothing new for players like Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill. Bumrah, rested in some white-ball games, will now lead the pace attack against South Africa, who haven’t won a Test in India since 2015. The visitors have a full squad and will start training on Monday, with the second Test set for November 22 in Guwahati. The last series ended 1-1 in South Africa, but this time the conditions will be different, with Kolkata and Guwahati expected to offer some help to fast bowlers.
