ICC Rejects Bangladesh’s Request to Move the T20 World Cup 2026 as Invalid

The ICC is not convinced of the BCB’s request to shift. This came after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) pulled Mustafizur Rahman out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The BCB has since written to the ICC stating “security concerns” as a reason to shift the venues of the T20 World Cup 2026 matches to other countries outside of India.

Why ICC Turned Down Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 Relocation Request

“After a thorough assessment of the prevailing circumstances and taking into account the increasing concerns related to the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India based on advice from the Bangladesh Government, the Board of Directors decided that the Bangladesh National Team would not go to India for the tournament under the existing circumstances,” said a BCB press release on January 4.

The BCB did not receive the expected reaction in this regard from the ICC. In fact, there were reports that ICC did not accept the request from the Bangladesh cricket board. The international cricket body even warned Bangladesh that they may be penalized if they fail to travel to India for the T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh cricket board was forced to write an explanation to the ICC in this respect.

“The ICC is still not satisfied with the BCB’s relocation request,” nor has the ICC said that there is a “valid” reason to hold the World Cup in Bangladesh because of security. “It’s not unusual to find boards sending their recce teams abroad,” says Arnold. “But BCB did not do that. India’s record is impeccable so far as organizing ‘cricket’ is concerned,” he says.

A source told RevSportz that,

“To demand relocation, you have to provide valid security reasons. You come to a conclusion about security threats only after a visit/visits from a security team/teams to the venues and receiving feedback. Without that, how can you say you are concerned about the players’ safety and security? Security-wise, India has an impeccable record as regards hosting multi-national sports events,”
