ICC Champions Trophy in Danger? Security Agencies Warn of Terrorist Kidnap Plot
Pakistan's Intelligence Bureau sent out a high alert on Monday, warning security forces about a possible plan by hidden groups to kidnap foreign guests attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for ransom. According to sources, the alert mentions several terrorist groups, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and other groups based in Balochistan.
After the warning, Pakistan's security teams including rangers and local police have been put on high alert to keep players and their staff safe. Pakistan is excited to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a huge milestone for the country's cricket scene. But many are now worried about whether the nation can handle such a high-profile international event safely.
Pakistan didn't host any cricket for over ten years after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. This incident raised serious doubts about the ability of the country's security forces. In response, the Punjab Police have put together a strong security plan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The plan covers both the Lahore and Rawalpindi stadiums.
According to a report in The News, up to 12,000 security personnel will be stationed in these cities and venues to ensure the visiting players are well-protected.
Keep in mind that if India makes it to the final since they're already through to the semis the big match will be held only in Dubai. If they don't, then Pakistan will get the hosting rights back.
