HC Orders Trial in MS Dhoni’s Defamation Case; Dhoni to Give Statement

MS Dhoni is going to give his statement after the Madras High Court decided that a trial should begin in a defamation case. Dhoni, the former India captain, has filed this case against two well-known TV channels and a journalist. They had involved his name in the 2013 IPL betting scandal, which he says is not true.
Dhoni’s Defamation Case to Start After Many Years
Justice CV Karthikeyan has appointed a lawyer to gather evidence for Dhoni. The former captain, who has won two World Cups, won’t be coming in person for the questioning because his presence might cause a lot of disturbance since he is a well-known celebrity.
Back in 2014, Dhoni filed a case asking for Rs 100 crore in damages. He says that during a TV debate about the IPL betting scandal, some people said things that hurt his reputation.
As per a report in The Hindu, senior counsel PR Raman submitted an affidavit from Dhoni seeking the start of the trial which has now been pending for a decade now thanks to the involved parties seeking relief over the years.
“The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence," the affidavit read.
IPL 2013 Spot-Fixing Scandal: Players Caught and Teams Banned
The 2013 IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal is seen as one of the biggest black marks in the history of the T20 league. Three players were caught and found guilty of spot fixing, and two teams, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, were banned for two years because some of their top officials were involved in betting. Dhoni stopped playing international cricket in August 2020, but he still plays for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
