Cricket Australia Plans BBL Revamp with Private Investment and Scheduling Shift: Reports
Cricket Australia is planning to shift the start of the Big Bash League (BBL) to around Christmas to reduce clashes with Test matches. Along with this change, they’re also thinking about raising the salary cap to attract top players and exploring private investment to help the league grow.
Private investment in the BBL is now a step closer, as it was one of the key suggestions made for the league's future. Another recommendation was to delay the start of the men's tournament to avoid long overlaps with Test cricket. Cricket Australia had asked Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to review the current format and suggest ways to improve the BBL. BCG shared their findings earlier this week and Cricket Australia will now take time to review the report in more detail in the coming months.
The planned changes aim to modernize the BBL and bring it in line with other major franchise leagues like the IPL, SA20 and ILT20, which are privately owned and have drawn big investments from Indian firms and private equity groups. According to the BCG report, while the BBL remains steady, it falls behind in player salaries and overall star appeal. To bridge this gap, privatization is being considered as it could help offer higher pay to attract top international T20 players, support grassroots development and infrastructure, and build strong financial reserves, with a goal of raising over $100 million.
"Significant existing commercial value in the BBL and strong potential for further growth. The success of the T20 format has been a huge boost for the game globally in attracting new audiences and increasing participation. We need to ensure that the Big Bash remains among the world's top sporting competitions.'" Todd Greenberg, the Cricket Australia CEO, said
"We need to ensure that the Big Bash remains among the world's top sporting competitions. We will now undertake an exploratory process of the recommendations in this report to ensure any action we take achieves this potential and is in the best interests of Australian Cricket and cricket fans." He added.
Private Investment on the Horizon for BBL
The BBL has so far avoided private investment, but that may change after The Hundred’s £975 million franchise sale drew major global interest. Though top overseas players can now earn AU$420,000, the BBL still struggles against SA20 and ILT20. Private funding could boost salaries and competitiveness. A key issue remains the overlap with Australia's Test summer, limiting star player availability. While January may offer a clearer window this season, future tours like the 2026-27 India Test series could create further clashes.
Cricket Australia plans to start the BBL around Christmas to avoid clashing with Test matches. They’re also considering raising the salary cap and bringing in private investment. A report by BCG recommended these steps to help the BBL compete with leagues like the IPL and SA20. Though stable, the BBL falls behind in player pay and star power. Private funding could boost salaries, support grassroots cricket and strengthen finances. CEO Todd Greenberg said they’ll review the report to keep the BBL among the top leagues. Player availability remains a challenge due to overlapping Test matches.
The BBL faced a tough period after expanding to a full home-and-away season in 2018–19, followed by the challenges of Covid-19. In response, the 2023–24 season was shortened to 10 regular games. Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird emphasized that no final decisions have been made yet and any future steps will aim to benefit the BBL, WBBL, fans and Australian cricket as a whole including investments in player development and participation programs.
