BCCI Deliberates Over Mohammed Shami's Inclusion for BGT 2024-25 Australia Tour

BCCI Deliberates Over Mohammed Shami's Inclusion for BGT 2024-25 Australia Tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appears to be in no rush to send Mohammed Shami to Australia for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Despite Shami's impressive performance in the opening Test, where he claimed seven wickets after nearly a year-long absence, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee remains undecided about his participation in the upcoming matches.

Shami, who is currently representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is making a steady comeback following an ankle surgery earlier this year. His return saw him perform well in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh, marking his first competitive appearance after recovering from an injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

While former players have advocated for Shami to be flown to Australia, the BCCI seems content with the current lineup. According to a report by the Times of India, the board has not engaged in discussions regarding Shami's inclusion. A source close to the BCCI stated, "There have been no conversations about sending Shami to Australia. The fast bowlers in Australia did a good job in Perth."

In the first Test match against Australia, India's pace attack was spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, who took eight wickets, along with Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana, who claimed five and four wickets respectively. Their collective efforts led to a commanding 295-run victory for India. After being dismissed for 150 in their first innings, India restricted Australia to a mere 104 runs. Centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli propelled India to a formidable 487/6 declared, setting a target of 534 runs for the hosts, who were eventually bowled out for 238.

As the series progresses, the BCCI's strategy appears to rely on the existing squad's performance, giving Shami more time to regain his full form through domestic cricket. His recent participation in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he took three wickets, showcases his ongoing recovery and readiness to return to international cricket at the right moment.

The decision on Shami's inclusion remains a topic of interest, as the series continues to unfold with high stakes and expectations from Indian cricket fans.
