FAQs about the T20 World Cup Super Eights
Which teams have reached the Super Eights?
Teams including India, Zimbabwe, West Indies, and South Africa in Group 1 and Pakistan, England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka in Group 2 are the eight teams that remain.
Were the Group placements decided due to points or net run rate?
No. Teams were placed in their respective groups under the pre-determined seedings announced ahead of the tournament, according to which,
India were designated X1, Australia X2, West Indies X3, and South Africa X4. Similarly, England were given Y1 position, New Zealand Y2, Pakistan Y3, and Sri Lanka Y4. If a team holding one of these positions did not make it to the Super Eights, the qualifying team from their group will take their spot. For instance, Australia were X2, but after their elimination, Zimbabwe got that position.
Is there any reserve day for Super Eights games?
No. Only the semi-finals and final will get a reserve day. In case of a washout in Super Eight games, points will be shared between the teams.
How many teams from each group will proceed to the next stage?
The next stage, the semi-finals, will be played by the top two teams from each group. Teams winning in the semis will make it to the final.
Where will the semi-finals and final be played?
That depends upon whether or not Pakistan qualify. If Pakistan qualify for the semi-final, they will play the first semi-final regardless of their points or position in the group. In that case, the match will be held in Colombo. However, if Pakistan do not qualify, it will be played in Kolkata.
If India qualify, they will play the second semi-final, scheduled to take place in Mumbai on March 5, irrespective of where they end up on the table.
The same applies to the final as well. If Pakistan qualify, it will be played in Colombo, and otherwise, in Ahmedabad.
Will the team carry their points from the group stages?
No. All teams begin with a clean slate, with no points or net run rates affecting their progression to the next stage.
Will the results at the T20 World Cup affect the 2028 Olympics qualification?
In a way, yes. While the qualification pathway for the 2028 Olympics has not yet been confirmed, reports suggest that in addition to the USA qualifying as the host, one team from each continent, the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia will play the tournament. These teams will be decided based on the ICC T20I rankings at a certain cut-off time, likely at the conclusion of this T20 World Cup. If so, final standings in the tournament could influence those rankings.
