Abrar Ahmed Gill send off: Bowler Responds After His Gesture Sparks Debate
Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed said that he joked with India’s star batter Virat Kohli and asked him to hit a six during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match. India easily defeated Pakistan in a Group A match in Dubai and eliminated the team from the tournament. The 26-year-old leg-spinner got the chance to bowl to Kohli in the big India-Pakistan match. Despite Pakistan's loss by six wickets, Abrar took the match personally.
Abrar made an impact with a controlled spell of 1/28 in ten overs. More importantly, he restricted Kohli with his accurate bowling, making the Indian star work hard for his runs. Abrar also took the wicket of Shubman Gill in the match.
"My childhood dream of bowling to Kohli came true in Dubai. It was a big challenge, and I jokingly asked him to hit a six, but he never got angry. Kohli is a great batter, we all know that. But he is also a great person," Abrar told Telecom Asia Sport. It was Kohli’s reaction after the match that amazed Abrar. He was especially surprised by Kohli’s incredible fitness and dedication to his game.
"He said, 'well bowled' after the match, and that made my day. I grew up idolizing Kohli and used to tell Under-19 players that one day I would bowl to him. Kohli's fitness is amazing. The way he runs between the wickets stands out, and that's what makes him a special cricketer," Abrar added.
Abrar bowled an excellent delivery to dismiss Shubman Gill, sending Indian opener packing with an incisive turn that struck the stumps. His neck flick of celebration towards the pavilion was a hit on social media, with some terming it provocative, but Abrar brushed away the reaction as nothing serious.
“That's my style and I see nothing wrong with it. No official told me that I did anything wrong, but if it hurt anyone, I am sorry for that. It was not my intention to hurt anyone,” Abrar said.
