Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are one of the major franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). At the same time, they are also considered one of the most underperforming teams, as they were yet to win the prestigious T20 league even once until 2025. The Bengaluru side have finished runners-up on three occasions in the IPL – 2009, 2011 and 2016. They finished runners-up in the 2011 Champions League T20 tournament as well. RCB hold the records for both the highest and the lowest totals in the history of the IPL – 263/5 and 49, respectively. That itself explains the two sides of the Bengaluru franchise.
For the inaugural 2008 edition, RCB signed many major names, with India legend Rahul Dravid being picked as the icon player (paid 15% more than the highest bid player at the auction). The other stars in the team were Jacques Kallis, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Mark Boucher, Dale Steyn, Ross Taylor and rising batter Virat Kohli. Bengaluru won only 4 of the 14 matches in the 2008 season, finishing seventh in the eight-team table. Only Dravid scored more than 300 runs for them, while the likes of Kallis struggled.
RCB made a terrific comeback and reached the final in 2009. Anil Kumble’s 4 for 16 restricted Deccan Chargers to 143/6. However, RCB failed with the bat and went down in the match by six runs. They reached the summit clash again in 2011 but conceded 205 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and were then held to 147/8. Under Kohli's captaincy, Bengaluru made their third IPL final in 2016. They had a terrific run in the run-up to the final and seemed destined to lift the trophy. However, RCB again faltered, going down to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight runs. SRH posted 208 batting first, and RCB ended on 200 despite Chris Gayle and Kohli's fifties. It was heartbreaking for the RCB captain as he scored a record 973 runs but could not lead his team to victory.
This long wait finally ended in 2025 when RCB, led by captain Rajat Patidar, won their maiden IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in a thrilling final. Their brand value surged to $269 million in 2025, making them the IPL's most valuable franchise. As defending champions in 2026, they started the season with a commanding six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Bengaluru have been far more consistent in recent years. They have reached the playoffs in the last three seasons before their 2025 triumph. Apart from Kohli, Dravid, Taylor, Zaheer and Kumble, Kevin Pietersen, Mitchell Starc, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Shane Watson are some of the big names who have been part of the RCB franchise in the IPL over the years.
