The pair added 45 runs for the fourth wicket before Keshav Maharaj struck, taking his second wicket by dismissing Shan Masood for 87 off 176 balls, which included two fours and three sixes. Pakistan were struggling at 212-4 in 73.3 overs. Mohammad Rizwan then joined Saud Shakeel and gave a good start, but he was dismissed for 19 off 39 balls, including two boundaries, by Kagiso Rabada.
Pakistan will continue their innings on the second day with Saud Shakeel unbeaten on 42 from 105 balls, joined by Salman Ali Agha, who has 10 runs from 25 balls. For South Africa, Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj have taken two wickets each, while Kagiso Rabada has picked up one.
Shan Masood Scores 13th Test Fifty Amid Steady Partnerships
Pakistan started the morning positively, with Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique rotating the strike well and finding boundaries regularly. Their partnership showed promise before Imam was bowled by Simon Harmer for 17, ending a 35-run stand. Shafique remained solid, mixing aggression with composure to frustrate the South African bowlers.
Captain Shan Masood joined Abdullah Shafique and quickly made an impact hitting two big sixes as Pakistan reached 65-1 after 20 overs. The pair put together a 50-run partnership by the 25th over gaining confidence as lunch approached. After the break, they continued their steady batting, taking Pakistan past the 100-run mark and keeping the momentum going.
Shan Masood stayed strong, scoring his 13th Test fifty, while Abdullah Shafique played an important innings after a slow start in the series opener. The pair put on 111 runs for the second wicket, keeping the pressure on the South African bowlers. Shafique went on to make his sixth Test fifty before Simon Harmer dismissed him for 57 off 146 balls, which included four boundaries. Babar Azam then joined Masood and got off to a steady start, but the pair added only 21 runs for the third wicket before Keshav Maharaj dismissed Babar for 16 off 22 balls, leaving Pakistan at 167-3 in 56 overs.
