LPL 2026 Gets 650+ Overseas Registrations Despite New Social Media Rules

LPL 2026 Gets 650+ Overseas Registrations Despite New Social Media Rules

[ Poll: GwbKaayM ]

Ahead of the sixth season, the Lanka Premier League (LPL) has received more than 650 registrations from overseas players representing 21 cricket-playing nations. The player draft for the 2026 season will be held on June 1, while the tournament is scheduled from July 17 to August 8. What has caught attention is the huge number of registrations even after the league introduced one of the most unusual player eligibility rules seen in franchise cricket. Pakistan has contributed the highest number of overseas registrations, with 102 players signing up.

The West Indies follows with 75 players, South Africa with 66, Bangladesh with 48 and New Zealand with 41. Australia has 24 registrations, England 15, Ireland 16 and even India has 12 players in the pool. Among Associate nations, players from the USA and UAE make up a large chunk of entries. But not everyone will make the cut. The LPL has confirmed that only 310 players will eventually be shortlisted for the draft after the screening process.

Overseas LPL registrations by country

Country Players Registered

West Indies 75
South Africa 66
Bangladesh 48
New Zealand 41
Australia 24
Ireland 16
England 15
India 12

The huge number of registrations becomes even more interesting because of the LPL’s new social media-based player system. Earlier this month, the league made social media followers part of the eligibility rules for overseas players. In simple terms, a player’s cricket reputation alone is no longer enough to qualify for the top categories.

Even the “Gold” category requires players to have at least 150,000 followers online. Meanwhile, the “Classic” category mentions “reasonable fan base and commercial appeal” as part of the selection criteria.

LPL overseas player category rules

Category Cricket Requirement Social Media Requirement
Icon 75+ T20Is, 100+ franchise T20s 250,000+ followers
Star 50+ T20Is, 100+ franchise T20s 250,000+ followers
Gold 30+ T20Is, 75+ franchise T20s 150,000+ followers
Classic 20+ T20Is, 50+ franchise T20s “Commercial appeal”

The move shows how modern franchise leagues now give a lot of importance to social media presence, branding, and sponsorship value. A player with millions of followers can bring more attention and publicity to teams and broadcasters than a less famous cricketer, even if that player has better domestic performances.
