Delhi Capitals Appoint John Mooney as Fielding Coach for IPL 2026 Season
Delhi Capitals have appointed John Mooney as their new fielding coach for Indian Premier League 2026. The team, led by Axar Patel, will start their season against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1.
The match will be played at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Mooney becomes the first Ireland player to become a part of a support staff in the IPL.

As per ESPNcricinfo, John Mooney is set to become the new fielding coach. He will replace Gnaneswara Rao and Anton Roux before the new season of the Indian Premier League. He will join head coach Hemang Badani, bowling coach Munaf Patel and assistant coach Ian Bell in DC’s support staff for IPL 2026. Earlier this week, Kevin Pietersen announced his decision to part ways with the Capitals as the mentor.
John Mooney was formerly an international cricketer before becoming a full-time coach. He served as a fielding coach for the Afghanistan national cricket team during 2018-2019, then had a brief time with the West Indies. In 2025, he was appointed as the interim head coach of the Ireland women's national cricket team. He retired from international cricket in 2015, and since then, has received coaching certifications from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
