BCB Announces Women’s Bangladesh Premier League 2026, WBPL T20 to Start in April

BCB Announces Women’s Bangladesh Premier League 2026, WBPL T20 to Start in April

[ Poll: 0yYVRBLQ ]

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Wednesday, 11 February that it will be organising the first Women's Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) T20 tournament between 3 to 15 April. This will be Bangladesh's first time hosting a franchise-based T20 competition for women cricketers, and many of the women cricketers in the country see this as a great development towards achieving their goal of playing more professionally as female cricketers.

Nigar Sultana, captain of the Bangladesh women's national cricket team, was very excited to learn of this tournament's announcement when she spoke with Cricbuzz and stated that this tournament should also prepare the team for the upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup scheduled June 2025 in England.

WBPL Set to Begin in April, Boost for Women’s Cricket in Bangladesh

"I have been hearing for many years that this (WBPL) was going to happen, so finally the announcement has come. Obviously, it is good news. We have always said that there should be a competitive franchise tournament for women. Other countries are already playing women's franchise-based T20 tournaments, and it's paying dividends for them," said Nigar.

"If you want to compete in world cricket in the T20 format, you have to look at how other countries are progressing through franchise cricket. Most players take part in franchise leagues in different places, and that is how their skill levels develop in various ways. So for us, this would be a very good opportunity," she added.

"Plus, it would be a huge experience for both local players and those interested in the game. If we can bring in top-class players from world cricket who regularly play franchise leagues and have them share the dressing room and their experiences, the overall quality of cricket will improve. With the T20 World Cup ahead of us, this would be the best possible preparation," she said.

Local players will be selected via a draft that will ensure the equality of each team's ability, as some players will have been drafted onto the same team as other players from various backgrounds. Teams may also sign international players; therefore teams will have opportunities for this type of international experience that will enhance system quality and overall improve their ability as part of that league.

Rubaba Dowla, BCB Director, Chairperson of the BCB Women's Wing was appointed Chairperson of the WBPL Governing Council.
