Sri Lanka Beat Ireland by 20 Runs as Spinners Dominate in T20 Clash

Sri Lanka kept calm and won comfortably by 20 runs against Ireland to begin their campaign with a win. On a pitch expected to favor batters, their spinners made the difference. Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana took three wickets each and stopped Ireland’s chase. Earlier in the game, Ireland won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Irish started well and kept the batters in check. At the halfway stage, Sri Lanka were 68/2. 

Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis led the fightback with a partnership of 67 off just 29 balls to take the hosts well above the 150-run mark. They ended with 163/6 from their 20 overs.

Hasaranga–Theekshana Spin Show Seals Sri Lanka’s Comfortable Win

Pathum Nissanka looked dangerous at the top but was dismissed by George Dockrell. Kamil Mishara made 14 and Dunith Wellalage chipped in with 10 runs. Kusal Mendis remained not out on 56 off 43. Kamindu Mendis scored 44 off 19. Dockrell and Barry McCarthy got two wickets each, while Mark Adair and Gareth Delany got one each.

In reply, Ireland lost Paul Stirling in the 4th over. Ross Adair and Harry Tector added 32 off 28. Tector then joined hands with Lorcan Tucker to stitch a 49-run stand for the third wicket. The middle-order was blown away by an injured Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana. They were eventually bowled out for 143 in 19.5 overs. Theekshana and Hasaranga got three wickets each. Matheesha Pathirana got two, while Dushmantha Chameera and Dunith Wellalage got one apiece.
