West Indies Recall Hetmyer and Alzarri Joseph for Sri Lanka ODI Series

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, scheduled to begin on June 3 in Jamaica. The squad features the return of several key players, including left-handed batter Shimron Hetmyer and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, as the Caribbean side begins preparations for the road to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027.

Hetmyer’s inclusion marks an important step in his reintegration into the ODI setup. CWI views the explosive batter as a significant part of its long-term plans leading up to the 2027 World Cup. However, he is expected to join the squad ahead of the third and final ODI rather than at the start of the series.

Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph returns to international cricket after a lengthy injury layoff. The right-arm pacer has not played since July 2025 due to a back injury and will be looking to make an immediate impact upon his return. His comeback provides a major boost to the West Indies pace attack, which has lacked his experience and wicket-taking ability in recent months.

Another notable return is that of spinner Gudakesh Motie, who missed West Indies' tour of New Zealand in November. Motie’s inclusion adds depth and variety to the bowling attack, especially in conditions where spin could play an important role throughout the series.

West Indies Begin Important ODI Series Against Sri Lanka

The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka will be played at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, on June 3, June 6, and June 8. The matches represent the start of a crucial period for the West Indies as they seek to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after missing out on direct qualification for the previous edition.

Captain Shai Hope will continue to lead the side and will be aiming to extend West Indies’ impressive record at home. The Caribbean team currently enjoys a strong run in ODI cricket on home soil and will be looking to register a fifth consecutive home ODI series victory. Their most recent home series success came against Pakistan in August 2025.

Head coach Daren Sammy believes the team's recent performances have helped build confidence and momentum. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Sri Lanka, describing them as a disciplined and skilled ODI side capable of adapting to different conditions and match situations.

Speaking ahead of the series, Sammy emphasized the importance of maintaining intensity in the field and consistency across all departments. He said the team wants to play fearless yet intelligent cricket while continuing to develop a clear identity that reflects the values and ambitions of West Indies cricket.

The former West Indies captain also highlighted the importance of collective contributions over individual brilliance. According to Sammy, the team has spent the last 18 months focusing on winning key moments consistently rather than relying on standout performances from a handful of players. Building a strong home record remains one of the management's primary goals.

Following the ODI series, West Indies and Sri Lanka will face off in three T20 Internationals in Jamaica before shifting to Antigua for a two-match Test series. The West Indies ODI squad includes Shai Hope (captain/wicketkeeper), Ackeem Auguste, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Shimron Hetmyer, Amir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, and Shamar Springer.
