New PSL franchise owner set to revive Jamaica-based franchise in CPL
Kingsmen Sports Enterprise, led by US-based Pakistani entrepreneur Fawad Sarwar, have acquired the ownership rights to a Jamaica-based franchise that will feature in the upcoming season of Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Jamaica makes a CPL comeback
Kingsmen recently bought Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Auction. Besides Hyderabad, which is among PSL's most expensive franchises, they also own the Chicago Kingsmen in the Major League Cricket (MLC).
This will be the first time since 2023 that a Jamaica-based team will be a part of the CPL. Jamaica Tallawahs did not compete in the league's previous two editions, after their owner, Kris Persaud, sold the team to the league. Instead, Persaud launched a new franchise in Antigua: the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.
Sarwar outbid others
Interestingly, last year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Delhi Capitals owners, GMR Group, whose portfolio includes a handful of other teams across the globe, were in the final stages of acquiring the Jamaican franchise. The deal, however, eventually failed. This year as well, Sarwar had to outbid several interested parties to acquire the team.
“Our vision for Jamaica goes far beyond match days,” said Fawad Sarwar.
“This franchise is designed to act as an economic engine -creating employment, supporting local businesses, and positioning Jamaica as a global hub for cricket, culture, and sportainment,” he added.
The new name for the franchise is expected to be revealed soon, with the 2026 CPL edition due to run from early August until September 21.
