Age No Barrier: McDonald Considers Uncapped Teen for Australia’s Opening Spot in Border-Gavaskar Series

Age No Barrier: McDonald Considers Uncapped Teen for Australia’s Opening Spot in Border-Gavaskar Series

Following David Warner's retirement, Steve Smith is set to return to his customary No. 4 position, leaving the opening slot open for Usman Khawaja’s new partner at the top of the order. Australia’s interim coach, Andrew McDonald, has hinted that age will not deter the selection of a younger player for this crucial role.

In a recent interview on ABC TV's Offsiders, McDonald emphasized the need to select the best available team. "Any time we’re picking a Test team, we’re focused on assembling the best squad for the present," he stated. He further acknowledged the potential of uncapped talent, particularly highlighting young cricketer Sam Konstas, who made a notable impression in his first Shield match. "His performance in the second innings at the MCG against Scott Boland certainly caught our attention," McDonald remarked.

McDonald stressed that if a player is deemed ready, age or inexperience should not dissuade selectors. "If we believe Sam is capable of stepping into that role, the opponent's reputation should not factor into our decision-making," he explained. "Every player has to start somewhere, and we shouldn't hesitate to field a promising talent based on who they are up against."

As Australia gears up for the Border-Gavaskar series, the focus remains on choosing a side that can deliver results, regardless of the players' experience levels.
