"Former Player Critiques Team India’s Selection for Second Test, Questions Bowlers' Omission"
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed surprise at Team India's recent changes for the second Test in Pune. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma have dropped KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav, opting instead for Shubman Gill, Akash Deep, and Washington Sundar in this crucial match.
Chopra noted that while the batting lineup failed to perform adequately in Bengaluru—highlighted by a shocking first-innings total of just 46—the bowlers bore the brunt of the management's decision. Siraj's exclusion was particularly unexpected, as he has been struggling, yet there was a belief that he might retain his position based on the team's philosophy.
Kuldeep Yadav's removal raised eyebrows as well; he had delivered a commendable performance in the previous Test and has been a solid contributor in red-ball cricket. Chopra pointed out that the real issue lies with the batters, who faced collapses during critical moments of the last match.
"The dismissals of Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant triggered another collapse," he said. "It was the batters who faltered, not the bowlers, yet the latter faced the consequences." He further explained that the decision between Rahul and Sarfaraz was influenced by Gill's return from injury, making Gill the preferred choice at the number three spot.
In conclusion, Chopra's analysis calls into question the rationale behind penalizing the bowlers for a batting failure, suggesting that the team management's decisions may not reflect the actual performance issues on the field.
